DAY 1 Arrival Transfer - The Temples of Dambulla
Meet upon arrival at Colombo International Airport and drive to Sigiriya,
Check in at your hotel. Later on leave for a guided tour to the Dambulla Rock
Temple, which dates back to the 1st century BC, and which features 5 cave
temples flanking the golden temple of Dambulla. Here you will gaze upon cave
paintings along walls that shelter 150 statues of Lord Buddha. A gigantic Buddha
statue glittering in gold looks out over the unfolding panorama. Overnight stay
in Sigiriya.

DAY 2 The Ancient Scriptures of Aluvihare
You will be provided with breakfast at the hotel before setting out on a
guided visit to Matale Aluvihare Buddhist Monastery on route to Kandy. Over the
centuries, the monastery has compiled scripture after scripture of Lord Buddha,
which formed the 'Tripitaka', the most venerated book of Buddhists. At Aluvihare
steps lead to caves located towards the top of the rock upon which a Buddhist
temple is located dating back to the 3rd century BC. Return to the hotel for
relaxation and leisure, and an overnight stay.
DAY 2 Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
In the afternoon, you will set out on a guided tour of the Temple of the
Sacred Tooth Relic, which is a Buddhist temple located in the royal palace
complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. Said to house a tooth of the Buddha, it
is believed that whoever possesses the relic holds the governance of the
country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Bhikkhu monks of the chapters of Malwatte and Asgiriya
conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple at dawn, at noon and in
the evenings. On Wednesdays, there is a symbolic bathing of the relic with an
herbal preparation made from scented water and fragrant flowers called Nanumura
Mangallaya. This holy water is believed to contain healing powers and is
distributed among those in attendance. Overnight stay in Kandy.

DAY 3 Tour of the Temples
This morning, you will enjoy a calm breakfast at the hotel followed by a
guided tour to visit Gadaladeniya, Lankathilake and Embekke Temples in
Pilimathalawe. Constructed on a rocky outcrop, Gadaladeniya was built during the
reign of King Wickramabahu. Here you will gaze upon a small shrine dedicated to
Vishnu, guarding the main building which houses a venerated gold-plated Buddha
statue. From there proceed to Lankatilaka Temple, which dates to the early 14th
century, and which favours both Buddhism and Hinduism. Lankatilaka temple is
adorned with Kandy period paintings, Buddha statues and stone figures, as well
as rock inscriptions which shed light on the region’s history. Following this
visit, you shall venture onwards to Embekke Devalaya, the site of the Embekke
temple complex. Here, wooden pillars are engraved with lotuses, lions and
mermaids. Transfer to Nuwara Eliya in the afternoon for an overnight stay.

DAY 4 The Birthplace of Ramayana
Breakfast at the hotel is followed by a morning-time visit to Seetha Amman
Temple which is located in the village of Seetha Eliya. The temple is believed
to be the site of the Hindu epic Ramayana, where Sita was held captive by King
Rawana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her. On the rock
face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of
Rawana’s elephant. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

DAY 5 Rock Carvings in Uva
Breakfast at the hotel, with the rest of morning free to spend at your
leisure. After lunch, you shall embark on a guided tour of Dhowa Rock Temple, a
protected heritage site in the central mountains of the Uva province. The Dhowa
rock temple, which dates back 2000 years, is famous for its large unfinished
Buddha image, carved into the rock face. The site is beautifully located within
a ring of mountains, with a river which flows across the plateau. Overnight stay
in Bandarawela.

DAY 6 Sacred Sites of Ancient Pilgrimage
Breakfast at the hotel, followed by a transfer to Tissamaharama for a guided
tour of Kiri Vehera and Kataragama temples. Kri Vehera is a 6th-century stupa
and is believed to be have built by King Mahasena, a regional ruler of the
Kataragama area. Kiri Vehera is numbered among the Solosmasthana; the 16 most
sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites of ancient Sri Lanka. From there, you shall
venture onwards to Kataragama Temple, a site of ritual and festivity,
particularly in the summer months of July-August. Overnight stay in
Tissamaharama.

DAY 7 Guided tour of Mulkirigala Temple
A quiet breakfast at the hotel will be followed by a guided visit to
Mulkirigala Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple.
Rock formations and paddy fields
After breakfast, embark on a visit to Yatagala Temple, located in Yatagala Raja
Maha Viharaya, a short distance from Galle. This is a fascinating temple built
amongst boulder-like rock formations, one which looks out over paddy fields and
small hamlets. Overnight stay in Galle.
Overnight at Lady Hill
DAY 8 Promote Peace Pagoda
Breakfast at the hotel, followed by a visit to the Japanese Peace Pagoda,
Rumassala. This pagoda is a Buddhist stupa built to inspire people to promote
peace. Many similar peace pagodas built since World War II have been erected
under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan
and founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. Overnight stay in Galle.
Overnight at Lady Hill
DAY 9 Farewell to Sri Lanka
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the airport. Thank you for
